![]() ![]() The novel establishes that Rose and Paige joined the Resistance after their impoverished home planet was devastated by the First Order. Rose's backstory was revealed in the novel Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Cobalt Squadron (2017), in which Rose is the protagonist along with her sister Paige, a minor character in the film. A struggling actress who had considered quitting the profession altogether before seeking the part, Tran went through an intense five-month audition process, beating out hundreds of other actresses for the role. The Last Jedi was Tran's first film role, and she had never watched a Star Wars film prior to auditioning for the part. Rose was created by The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson after he decided a subplot originally involving Finn and Poe Dameron needed a different dynamic. A mechanic with the Resistance, she befriends Finn ( John Boyega) and works with him to try to help Resistance forces escape from the First Order. I really hope that even though she was pretty much Rian's character, JJ still gives this hero what she's due.Rose Tico is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise, first appearing in the simultaneously released Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Cobalt Squadron (both 2017). So I guess I'm just hoping that she gets a bit more story than we've seen so far. It just stings right now that she feels so absent. ![]() She is a fucking heroic character in every way, if you ask me. Even the act of setting the fathiers loose had the characteristic anarchy of a rebel who had nothing more to lose but just wanted to at least do something to make the lives of oppressors a bit more difficult. She was brave and idealistic and had her head on straight. She was dedicated to the Resistance, and everything she did reflected that. As her own character, she was the every-person, and she was actually invested in this war because of how her homeworld suffered. I feel the role she played in TLJ is no less important than Poe's: she was essential in the tracker decryption plotline, and she was essential in Finn's character development. Now, maybe they're trying to generate hype for Jannah exactly because she's new so people would be more receptive of her when the movie comes out, but still, too little Rose for how much of her there was in TLJ. Even Jannah, an entirely new character, is so much more present in the marketing. My main bone with all this, really, is the side-lining of Rose's character. Now, I have no objections to them getting together that way in the last movie, especially if it serves the story, but in this promo period, for people to keep saying that "the trio is finally together" feels kind of disingenuous. ![]() Especially in the face of the marketing for the "trio," which, if you consider 1) the fact that Poe was meant to die in the first movie if Oscar Isaac hadn't objected because it was a character direction he'd only just gone through with another character he'd recently played, and 2) there has essentially been no "trio" in the first two movies, it doesn't make a lot of sense other than for marketing and nostalgia (the first two trilogies had trios) purposes. This makes me think they've significantly reduced her role in TRoS. She played such a big part in TLJ, but she feels so absent from the clips, the promos. In a lot of ways, it feels like they've given in to the undeserved hostility. ![]() I do not agree with this, obviously, and I think they could have done better both by her character and Kelly Marie Tran in this period. After the (undeserved, IMO) backlash her character received, I can see why the powers-that-be would want to minimize her appearance in promotional materials. ![]()
